Medical Grade Peels

Many factors can take their toll on the skin, from sun exposure to the ageing process. Damage might appear in a variety of ways, including fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities and skin laxity. In some cases, the skin may merely lose its lustre and start to look rather lifeless. No matter what type of concerns you might have about your complexion, a medical-grade skin peel might be the right solution for minimising imperfections and restoring healthy radiance to the dermis.

HOW DO THEY WORK? Medical Grade Chemical Peels break down and remove the bonds holding the top layers of the skin together, eliminating dead, dry skin cells on the outer surface to reveal healthier skin cells underneath. Superficial imperfections like pigmentation marks may be removed at the time of the procedure for a clearer complexion. The exfoliation process offered by the peel treatment also stimulates a controlled amount of inflammation and induces collagen remodeling, resulting in thicker, healthier skin over time and an improvement in your appearance overall.

WHAT CONCERNS CAN WE TREAT?  Medical-grade chemical peels are used to treat common skin concerns such as: ageing sun damage pigmentation melasma uneven skin tone and texture fine lines and wrinkles, acne, acne scarring, redness and rosacea

CHOICES IN CHEMICAL PEELS There are different types of chemical peels available on the market, which vary in strength and are classified according to the depth of treatment: Extra-light, Superficial, Medium and Deep. Here at Hands-On Laser Cosmetic Clinic, we offer extra-light, superficial and medium chemical peels. A well-scheduled regimen of these peels can provide the same aesthetic outcomes as a deep peel, with little to no downtime, with far less risk.

SUPERFICIAL PEELS These peels have minimal downtime and suit all skin types. They remove the outermost layers of dead skin and stimulate the formation of newer, healthier skin, resulting in a healthier complexion, improved pigmentation and reduction of fine lines. Your optimal outcome can be achieved after a series of superficial peels. Formulations for superficial peels include the following ingredients: AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) that include glycolic and lactic acid. These are customised at various concentrations to achieve desired results. These peels are effective for hydration, as well as treating ageing, sun damage and pigmentation issues. We prefer to use lactic peels because they are more gentle than glycolic peels, their concentrations can be easily tailored to patients’ needs and, as a result, they cause less irritation and downtime than glycolic peels. BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) consisting of salicylic acid. These peels are effective in treating facial congestion and acne. There may be some mild peeling after treatment. Retinoic acids which help to increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen production, resulting in healthier looking skin. This peel is left on for up to 10 hours and washed off at home. There will be mild peeling for up to five days.

MEDIUM DEPTH PEELS Like its name, these peels penetrate deeper into the skin layers and involve greater peeling post-treatment compared to superficial peels. They can address moderate skin problems including acne scars, an uneven skin tone and deeper wrinkles. Formulations for medium peels like a Jessner peel include these possible ingredients, at a higher concentration than you would find in a superficial peel: Lactic acid, salicylic acid, resorcinol and kojic acid. A combination of different acids in a medium peel works well for addressing sun damaged and ageing skin, cystic acne, oily skin and combination skin prone to breakouts. Trichloroacetic acid or TCA peels provide resurfacing of the skin’s topmost layer of cells, improving skin texture, wrinkles and pigmentation issues. TCA peels use a variant of acetic acid (vinegar) to remove damaged or problematic skin cells, and the peel can be customised to an individual’s needs. Typically, patients can expect between seven and 10 days of downtime while their skin renews. We can also perform a TCA Cross instead of a full face TCA peel which is effective for acne scarring and pitting.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A PEEL? It is recommended to have a skin consultation a couple of weeks before your treatment to select an appropriate peel for your skin type and problem. If necessary, you will be given steps to prepare the skin for two weeks prior to your appointment. This encourages better penetration of the peel, increases effectiveness, and reduces any complications such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?  When you come to Hands-On Laser Cosmetic Clinic for your treatment, we will start by cleansing your skin and applying a peel prep solution if needed. The peel is then applied for a prescribed period ranging from five to 10 minutes. There may be mild stinging while the ingredients work in the dermis. The peel is then neutralised, and serums and sunscreen are applied post-treatment to protect the skin and promote healthy healing.

HOW WILL I LOOK RIGHT AFTER MY TREATMENT?  The skin may be slightly red and irritated right after the procedure, but this can be covered up with makeup after a few hours. There may be mild skin peeling three to five days post treatment, depending on the type and strength of the peel, after which your complexion will look healthier and rejuvenated. We recommend that you keep your skin protected from the sun for three to five days post-peel, as it will be especially sensitive to UV rays during the peeling process. It is important to not pick at any peeling as this can delay healing and increase the risk of infection and scarring. We will provide you with more detailed aftercare instructions based on the type of peel administered.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PEELS?  Medical chemical peels are safe and effective if performed by a trained professional. Medium chemical peels have a slightly longer downtime than for superficial peels, but compared to deep peels, the risk for complications is much lower. However, we will give you all the information necessary to minimise the risks and ensure the best possible results from your treatment. In some cases, abnormal pigmentation can occur. This side effect can be minimised by avoiding the sun after treatment in most cases. If pigmentation does occur, prescriptive lightening creams may be recommended. Infection and scarring can also occur if the peeling skin is picked or scratched. These complications may require treatment with antibiotics or antivirals; however, prevention is always best.
